Premier League side Aston Villa have signed promising young midfielder Boubacar Kamara from Olympique Marseille. Kamara, who will move to Villa Park after the expiry of his contract with the Ligue 1 side, has joined Steven Gerrard’s team on a five-year deal. The 22-year-old has been a hot midfield prospect in all of Europe, with several clubs being constantly linked with his signature. Premier League clubs Manchester United, Newcastle United and Serie A side AS Roma were rumoured to be some of the teams interested in getting his signature. However, Aston Villa have won the race to get the services of the talented young midfielder.

He might just be 22 years old but has already played plenty of matches for his club. Coming through the youth ranks at Marseille, Kamara did not take time to settle down. He hit the ground running quickly after coming up with a huge reputation. So far he has done well to meet the required level at senior football. Head coach Steven Gerrard, as per their club’s website, said, “I am delighted that we have been able to attract one of the most promising young talents in European football. We have a very clear plan to make our team stronger and Bouba is an important part of that.”

Boubacar Kamara just got his first call-up to the France team

Earlier this month, the youngster got his first call-up to France’s senior side for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark, Austria and Croatia. This is a giant step in the midfielder’s growth. This proves that his good domestic form has not gone unnoticed. It is to be noted that he has represented his country at various youth levels. He has been selected for the U17, U19 and U21 European Championships and the U20 World Cup. If he continues to grow, then Kamara could also be a regular for his senior national side.

Steven Gerrard watched Kamara play from the stands in April

Boubacar Kamara had already got the seal of approval from Aston Villa’s head coach after impressing in his presence last month for Marseille. When they were playing Nantes in April, Steven Gerrard was in the stands. The 22-year-old started as a deep-lying midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation. Kamara managed an assist as he produced a solid display to help the hosts overcome a deficit to win the match 3-2. That outing could very well have convinced Gerrard to go all-in for the Frech midfielder.

Boubacar Kamara has vast experience in domestic and European football

He was just aged 5 when he entered the Olympique de Marseille Academy before making his way through all the categories. He might only be 22 years old but has already made 170 appearances for the French club in all competitions. In 2016, Kamara made his debut for Marseille just after he turned 17, in a Coupe de la Ligue match against Sochaux.

Not just domestically, but the 22-year-old midfielder also has good European experience. He has played in all three formats of European tournaments – Champions League, Europa League and the Europa Conference League. He made his Champions League debut against Manchester City in October 2020 and has also played 16 Europa League games. Besides, Kamara played a key role in helping Marseille reach the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League this season before losing to Feyenoord.
