Trent Boult created history on Monday during the second day of the Hagley Oval Test against Bangladesh. When the left-arm pacer got the wicket of Mehidy Hasan, Boult became the fourth New Zealand bowler to take 300 wickets in Tests. The day only became better for Trent Boult as he ended up with a five-wicket haul to ensure New Zealand bowled Bangladesh out cheaply. New Zealand had declared on 521/6 thanks to Tom Latham’s 252 and Devon Conway’s 109. Boult’s brilliance has ensured New Zealand has a 395-run lead with three days to go.

Speaking on the milestone, Boult said maintaining the line and length was crucial. “Milestones don’t really matter, there are some big names in this list. There was a good amount of pace and bounce on this wicket, enjoyed bowling on the surface – with Southee in, gives us a left-right combination well. Yes, we’re in a great position. It’s just about bowling with line and length, there is always something on offer from the pitch. It helped that the boys got a good total on the board as well,” Boult said.

New Zealand in the driver’s seat against Bangladesh

New Zealand were boosted by the brilliance of Tom Latham who led from the front with a brilliant 252. Devon Conway showed his brilliance with a magnificent 109, his second consecutive century in Tests. On day 1, New Zealand had lost only one wicket and they were in a magnificent position. On day 2, Conway and Latham’s 215-run stand ended when Conway was run out by Mehidy Hasan.

New Zealand reached a big score and then the bowlers got going in style. They were reduced to 27/5 thanks to a brilliant spell from Boult and Southee. Yasir Ali and Nurul Hasan shared a 50-run partnership but when that was broken, the rest of the batting folded for 126.

Boult got his first wicket when Shadman Islam poked at an away-swinger to fall for 7. Tim Southee then dismissed Naim Islam for 0. The duo of Boult and Southee wreaked havoc, with Boult ending up with the wickets of Liton Das and Nazmul Hossain Shanto. Boult created history when he cleaned up Mehidy Hasan with a full ball that curved back in on off stump. The left-arm pacer ended the day on a high when he castled Shorfiul Islam with an away-swinger.

Boult ended with figures of 13.2-3-43-5, while Southee gave him good support with a haul of 12-4-28-3. Kyle Jamieson was the other successful bowler with 9-3-23-2.
