The first New Zealand vs Bangladesh Test ended on Wednesday (January 5) in historic fashion. Bangladesh, who until this point had never beaten New Zealand in Test cricket, finally registered a win over the Black Caps.

That this win came away from home would have made it all the sweeter for the Tigers. New Zealand, after all, are World Test champions – and quite the prospect to play against at home.

However, since Day 2 of the Test Bangladesh have steadily been building control. First they dismissed the hosts for less than 350 in the first innings. Then, they took a lead of 130 runs.

Then they bundled out New Zealand again in the second innings, this time for just 169. This meant they needed only 40 runs to win the Test, and they got the required runs before lunch.

Ebadot Hossain was the standout bowler for the visitors, something reflected in the fact he won the Man of the Match. But, as skipper Mominul Haque pointed out afterwards, it was a combined effort that won them the Test.

“Everyone was keen to win the match and they put their hand up in all three departments. We won because of the bowlers, both in the first and second innings they were outstanding,” he said after the match.

“They did all the hard work and bowled in the right areas.”

Indeed, the second innings was all about the Bangladesh bowlers. New Zealand began the day at 147-5 but lost their last 5 wickets for just 22 runs.

Once Ebadot had castled Ross Taylor, the floodgates well and truly opened. And by the end of their innings, Bangladesh needed only 40 runs to seal the win.

New Zealand vs Bangladesh: how Tigers scripted the win

It’s telling that, despite needing only 40 runs, Bangladesh still lost 2 wickets en route to the score. The pitch was not an easy one to bat on by the last day.

Tim Southee got one to bounce and take the top of Shadman Islam’s bat for the first breakthrough of the day. However, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque batted well enough to blunt the home team’s bowlers.

Shanto survived an optimistic LBW shout and review from Trent Boult. However, he would not be in the middle when the winning runs were scored.

This is because Kyle Jamieson got him to edge one to Taylor at first slip, who took a fine diving catch to delay the inevitable for Bangladesh.

Yet they did not have to wait long to celebrate. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a boundary off Jamieson to finish the match – and get the series off to the perfect start.

The second and final Test of the series begins from Sunday (January 9).
