The class of 2008 in Under-19 cricket was very special for world cricket. It gave legendary players like Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson. Among the bowlers, it gave one certain New Zealand bowler who would go on to change the very landscape of their cricket. From the frying pan, he was thrust into the fire of international cricket. On his debut, he blasted 77 off 40 balls which included nine sixes against England in Napier. He picked up 5/55 on debut as well.

13 years on, Tim Southee has more or less fulfilled the tag of being a once-in-a-generation New Zealand great. In Tests, he is one of the four New Zealand bowlers to have gone past 300 Test wickets. His new-ball partnership with Trent Boult, his Under-19 partner in crime is legendary. It is the new ball combination of Southee and Boult that has enriched international cricket. In ODIs, he has been New Zealand’s talisman. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2011 World Cup. But, in 2015, he produced a spell of 7/33 against England that was ranked as one of the best in the decade.

He had a special liking for England. A fantastic debut, a World Cup brilliance, and also in the Lord’s Honours Board. With the bat, Southee is an accomplished tail-ender. Who else can claim to have hit 70-plus sixes in Test cricket batting below number eight? That is Tim Southee in a nutshell. His brilliance with the ball in formats is simply sensational. What makes his bowling an X-factor is a fact that he has achieved tremendous success in Asia. In India, he has taken two five-wicket hauls and bowled New Zealand to a rare win in Sri Lanka. Southee was one of the architects in New Zealand’s wins over Pakistan in the UAE and Australia in Hobart.

If one has to judge the history books of cricket, Tim Southee will find a special mention in the game. Without a doubt, he is a great New Zealand if not world player to have graced the game of cricket.

Tim Southee International debut

Tim Southee made his international debut in 2008 in the Test match against England in Napier. In that same series, he had earlier made his Twenty20 International debut. When New Zealand toured England in 2008, he made his ODI debut in Chester-le-Street

Tim Southee in International Cricket

Tim Southee was already destined for great things when he made his debut and he showed it in grand style. He blasted 77 off 40 balls against England in Napier and also ended up taking 5/55. In his first ODI series, Southee won the Man of the Match award in the Bristol ODI against England. At the start of his career, Southee was a death bowler who could nail the yorkers at will. He had a natural outswinger and he even worked on his inswinger.

He was plagued by injuries at the start of his career but he has now evolved as one of the greats of the game. But, from 2013, in partnership with Boult and Neil Wagner, Southee has emerged as one of the greats. He took a total of 10 five-wicket hauls and has taken 264 wickets in this period. In ODIs, he is on the cusp of reaching 200 ODI wickets. The best period was 2015, in which he took 28 wickets which included a haul of 7/33 at the Cake Tin in Wellington. As captain, he has had moderate success in the Twenty20 International circuit. However, he is best remembered for taking a hat-trick against Pakistan in 2011. He became the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in all formats. As an international cricketer, Southee has had a tremendous impact.
