In Australia, blooding young fast bowlers before they turned 20 is a rarity. But, on a hostile day in Johannesburg 2011, Pat Cummins stepped up and showed the world that there was an individual who was made differently. Possessing immense pace and clever variations in length and line, Pat Cummins gave people like Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla, and AB de Villiers a run for their money. His 6/79 in 2011 in that cauldron of the Bullring in Wanderers was the making of a new legend. In addition, his batting helped Australia chase down 310 and eliminate the nightmare of that 47 all out in Newlands a week earlier.

The Johannesburg heroics should have been the dawn of something sensational. But, alas, a long list of injuries stalled Pat Cummins’ career. For six years, he struggled to play Tests on a consistent basis. He made baby steps in ODIs and T20Is for Australia and for the Sydney franchises in the Big Bash League. But, Australia yearned for him to come back to Tests. When he came back on a concrete slab in Ranchi against India in 2017, he send down 34 overs and picked up four big wickets. In conditions that did not help him, Cummins gave a glimpse of what made him special six years ago.

There was no looking back for Pat Cummins after Ranchi. His exploits in the Ashes from 2017 to 2021 have been nothing short of legendary. In the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal and sexting scandal that bought down Tim Paine and Steve Smith, Australia needed a steady figure in Pat Cummins. Thus, in 2021, Pat Cummins created history when he became the first pace bowler in 65 years to captain Australia in Tests. Cummins ended up winning 4-0. It is just the start of something special for a very special cricketer.

However, he suffered a series of injuries that stalled his international career by six years. All those years of extensive rehabilitation have toughened Cummins up for international cricket. In 2017, he made a comeback to the Test side and he took four wickets on a flat deck in Ranchi against India.

However, when he played his first home series against England in the Ashes, he has been sensational. In all of the Ashes exploits from 2017 to 2021, Cummins has been the leading wicket-taker. Cummins has come out on top in contests against Virat Kohli, showing his appetite for taking the big fish. Cummins is nearing 200 wickets in Tests and he has only played 38 Tests. With age still on his side, Pat Cummins is destined for greater things in his career.
