When Australia arrives in India in February, they will continue their strategy of not playing any tour matches prior to an away Test series. Australia will play India in a four-match Test series for the first time since 2017 in India. They had not played any tour games prior to their series in Pakistan last March, in which they won 1-0. Head coach Andrew McDonald has stated that they are instead aiming to be inventive in their own conditions in order to prepare for what they will face in India.

“We feel as though we don’t need that match practice as such. We’re going to go to India about a week out from the first game. We didn’t want to press for too much longer, in terms of the preparation. “We feel as though seven days is ample time to get ready and to make sure we maintain freshness throughout the whole four Test match series,” McDonald said. We had some success doing that, going to Pakistan. We had a shortened period on the ground there.”

Australia have lost the last three BGTs

We can be creative in our own conditions. We’ve done it before with the Pakistan build-up in Melbourne. Dusting up wickets. Fit for purpose. Working with the local groundsmen who really help us in and around the country. We feel as though we can get as close to that as possible without necessarily having a practice game” the head coach said. Last Australia beat India in a Tests series was back in 2014-15 when they won the series by 2-0. That was also the last series for MS Dhoni as India’s Test captain. Since then, India won the 2017 series by 2-1 at home and then by the same margin in 2018-19, and 2020-21 in Australia. their series win in 2018 in Australia was their first ever down under in their history.
