Australia enters the third and final test against South Africa in Sydney on Wednesday, January 4, looking for a series sweep and a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final to finish off a strong home summer. Pat Cummins’ team, which won the series with an innings victory in Melbourne last week, can book their place in the WTC decider at The Oval in June with a win at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Despite the absence of paceman Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Cameron Green due to finger ailments, Australia has enough of depth and the opportunity to experiment ahead of next month’s four-test tour of India.
Australia has been brutal in both Tests, exposing South Africa’s batting weakness. Dean Elgar’s side failed to break 300 in both Tests. South Africa’s bowling has looked good, but their efforts have been overshadowed by batting. With only one Test remaining, the Proteas cannot anticipate a miracle with the bat. Elgar wants his boys to compete hard and stay in contention for the WTC final race.
