The India cricket team is one of the dominant nations when it comes to cricket. In limited-overs cricket, they have joined Australia, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan to have won all three major ICC tournaments in ODIs and T20Is. Now, ahead of the first ODI against the West Indies in Ahmedabad on February 6, the Indian cricket team is on the cusp of a very special achievement.

India will become the first nation in the history of cricket to play 1000 ODIs. They started playing ODI cricket, with the first match against England in 1974. After a slow start, India became one of the leading nations in the format by winning the 1983 World Cup. In the last two decades, India has become one of the most dominant nations in ODIs, winning the 2011 ICC World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. In 999 matches so far, India has won 518 and lost 431 matches. India and Australia are the only nations to have won over 500 ODIs, with Australia leading the pack with 581. In fact, only Australia, India, and Pakistan have played over 900 ODIs in cricket history. Here is the table.

India dominant in ODIs

When India played their 500th ODI, it was against England in Chester-le-Street and Sourav Ganguly was in charge. In an interview with Sportstar, Sourav Ganguly had said how that ODI changed Indian cricket forever. He fondly recalls how India changed their style of cricket after that and are now one of the dominant powers in the game. However, for the 1000th ODI, there will be no crowds as India looks to tackle the coronavirus omicron wave. But, this will be the first full-time assignment in ODIs for new skipper Rohit Sharma. Here is the breakup of India’s ODIs from 1 to 900.

Rohit had missed the tour of South Africa due to an injury. Virat Kohli had relinquished the T20I captaincy but he was asked to let go of the ODI captaincy before the tour. Kohli shocked the world when he announced that he was giving up the Test captaincy as well following India’s defeat.

Rohit Sharma’s First Major Test

As ODI and T20I captain, Rohit Sharma has never tasted defeat in any of the series where he has been captain. Kohli, on the other hand, had a dominant run in his captaincy. He won 40 out of 68 Tests while in ODIs, his success rate was closer to 70. In ICC events ever since 2013, India has stumbled in the knockout stages of the tournament frequently.

The series against the West Indies will include three ODIs and three T20Is. The ODIs will be played in Ahmedabad while the Twenty20 Internationals will be held in Kolkata. While there are no crowds in Ahmedabad, there will be a 75 percent allowance for fans in Kolkata to attend the T20I games.
