The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the venues for the limited-overs home series against the West Indies, starting from February 6. The Indian cricket board, in particular, announced the change in venues with the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad set to hold the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series while Eden Gardens in Kolkata to stage the entire T20I series. The board had enlisted six venues for the series against the Carribean nation in the home calendar for the Indian team for 2021-22 season announced in September. Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Kolkata were named for the three ODIs on February 6, 9 and 12 respectively while Cuttack, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram for the three T20Is on February 15, 18 and 20.

“The decision to limit the series to two venues instead of six as originally announced has been done to mitigate biosecurity risks by cutting down on travel and movement of the teams, match officials, broadcasters, and other stakeholders,” BCCI said in a statement.

The board has also tweaked the dates for the two series to accommodate the dates — February 12 and 13 – of the IPL 2022 auction. The dates were confirmed earlier this evening by the board secretary Jay Shah with the venue is yet to be announced.

The T20 series will also act as a good platform to prepare the Indian team for the Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to get underway in October in Australia. It will help the team get a hint of their core players’ form and decide their best XI accordingly. West Indies have been two-time T20 World Cup champions and are expected to be a good test for the home side.

India are later scheduled to play in the shortest format against Sri Lanka (March), South Africa (June), England (July) on the course of the T20 World Cup. The Men-in-Blue will, meanwhile, begin their campaign at the World Cup on October 23 against arch-rivals Pakistan in a mouth-watering Super 12 contest. They will later take on a qualifier, South Africa, Bangladesh and another team yet to qualify at the marquee event.
