The sport of badminton has always seen new champions in the past who have startled the world with their performances. However, when it comes to badminton-playing nations, Spain is not one of the dominant pages of badminton history. That story was changed by the performances of one woman, Carolina Marin. She not only dominated the sport but also put the identity of Spain as a dominant force in the badminton world. Marin broke the domination of China, Japan and other Asian countries on the world stage.

Marin has been world champion three times which is a very immaculate feat considering the country from where she comes from does not have a lot of following towards this sport. She also made history by becoming the youngest European player to win the World Championship. She became the first Spaniard to win a gold medal at the World Championships by defeating a Chinese player. Carolina’s interaction with the sport is very strange at the same time very interesting. She started as a Flamenco dancer. However, a friend of hers introduced her to badminton after which she fell in love with the sport. Marin made her international badminton debut in 2005 at the international U15 event in Brussels after which there was no looking back.

Although Carolina has been with the sport for a long time, her career break came in the year 2015 when she won 5 superseries titles and her second world championship. That year she also climbed the world rankings to become world no.1. She added to this success with an Olympic gold next year. Marin entered the Rio Olympics as the number 1 seeded player. In the finals of the Rio Olympics, she defeated PV Sindhu to clinch the Olympic gold. However, the greatest hurdle that came in Marin’s life was her ACL injury in 2019. She overcame everything like a lioness and won many accolades on the trot like Thailand Open Super 1000, Syed Modi etc.

Marin’s international fame has made her the face of many Spanish brands in the Asian markets. She has partnered with many international brands:

The relative success that these endorsement deals have with the Spaniard can be fathomed from her head of communication Ignacio Premio’s words, “Carolin, at the enterprise level, has caught the interest of Spanish companies.” However, it’s not only the brand endorsements that have come in plenty in Marin’s life but also the image rights of Marin and her personality which has made her so popular. Marin’s strong ‘cultural similarities’ even landed her in the Bollywood industry. She was persuaded to play the role of her compatriot Saina Nehwal in a movie.
