The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) Secretary General Muhammad Fadil Imran informed that 247 of world’s best shuttlers from 32 countries will participate in prestigious event.
HS Prannoy has been the lone bright spot for India at the prestigious Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament. The 29-year-old defeated world number 12 Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong 21-11, 21-18 on Thursday, in the men’s singles round of 16 match. The world number 23 will take on winner of the match between Rasmus Gemke and Brice Leverdez in the quarter-final on Friday at Istora. Meanwhile it has been a disappointing tour for India so far, as Prannoy is the only Indian left in the fray at the tournament. After the Thomas Cup triumph last month, the Indian team failed to live up to the expectations and faltered in Jakarta.
Earlier in the day, India’s Sameer Verma ended his campaign at the Indonesia Open with a straight-game loss to world number 5 Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the second round here on Thursday. The 27-year-old went down 10-21, 13-21 to the Malaysian player in a 43-minute in men’s singles match. Meanwhile Ashwini Ponappa and N. Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 16-21, 13-21 to top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China in women’s doubles competition. Star Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth faced shocking first-round exit. Sindhu was ousted by Frenchman Leverdez.
