The Badminton Para World Championships 2024 is a bi-annual event that showcases the best para-badminton players in the world. They compete in six sports classes and five categories, depending on their type and level of impairment. The championships were formerly run by the Para Badminton World Federation (PBWF) until it merged with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in June 2011.

The 14th edition of the tournament will take place in Pattaya, Thailand from February 20 to 25, 2024. India will be hoping to repeat or surpass its stellar performance in the last edition, where it topped the medal table with 15.5 medals (2 Gold, 2 Silver, 11.5 Bronze). India dominated the men’s SL 3 category, winning all three medals, with Pramod Bhagat clinching the gold. India also had a gold medalist in the women’s SU 5 category, Manisha Ramadas, who beat the defending champion from China.

Indian Contingent at the Badminton Para World Championships 2024

India has sent a very strong 51-member contingent led by Paralympic Champions Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar. Added to this Paralympic medalists, Suhas Yathiraj, and Manoj Sarkar have also made the cut for the national side. On the other hand, in the women’s section all eyes will be on the young sensation Thulaisimathi, Manisha, and Palak Kohli.

Furthermore, the Badminton Para World Championships 2024 is divided in the following categories

  1. SL 3 – Players have impairment in one or both lower limbs and poor walking/running balance
  2. SL 4 – Players have impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal impairment in walking/running balance
  3. SU 5 – Players have impairment of the upper limbs.
  4. SH 6 – Players in this class have short stature
  5. WH 1 – Players in this class are those who have impairment in both lower limbs and trunk function and require a wheelchair to play
  6. WH 2 – Players have impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal or no impairment of the trunk and also require a wheelchair

The Badminton Para World Championships 2024 will commence on February 20 and will end on February 25.
