Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated China’s He Bing Jiao 21-9, 13-21, 21-19, on Friday, to reach the semi-finals of Badminton Asia Championships 2022, in Manila. With this win, the 26-year-old assured herself of a medal in the continental championships, which is making a return after a gap of two years because of COVID-19. The fourth seeded Indian, who had won a bronze in the 2014 edition in Gimcheon got the better of the Chinese in a quarter-final match that lasted an hour and 16 minutes. Meanwhile, later in the day, Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered defeat against Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, 12-21, 21-14, 21-16, in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final match.

World number seven Sindhu came into the match with a 7-9 head-to-head record against Bing Jiao, whom she had beaten twice in the last two meetings. The two-time Olympic medalist started the match positively and raced to a massive 11-2 lead . She made excellent use of the angles, produced powerful smashes and some unforced errors from Bing jiao made it easier for the Indian to pocket the first game within 13 minutes. Meanwhile the Chinese shuttler made a stupendous comeback to win the second game 21-13 and send the match into the decider. And then, Sindhu brought her A-game back in the third game, moving to a massive 11-5 lead going into the final change of ends. Although Bing Jiao showed some resistance, Sindhu got over the line in a hard-fought encounter at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex.
The 2022 Badminton Asia Championship will commence on April 26 and end on May 01.
