Tobi Amusan, the holder of the women’s 100m hurdles world record and the reigning World, Commonwealth and African champion in the 100 m hurdles, has come under scrutiny for an alleged anti-doping rule violation, according to a recent statement by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). The Nigerian athlete reportedly missed three tests within a 12-month period, thus incurring a charge.

The 26-year-old Tobi Amusan boasts a world record for the women’s 100m hurdles with a stunning time of 12.12 seconds, established during the World Athletics Championships 2022 the previous year. The athlete is determined to fight the charge, and seeks resolution before the upcoming World Athletics Championships 2023 slated for next month in Budapest, Hungary.

What Tobi said during the interview

As quoted from her Instagram post, she affirmed, “I intend to fight this charge and will have my case decided by a tribunal of three arbitrators before the start of next month’s World Championships. I am a CLEAN ATHLETE…I have FAITH that this will be resolved in my favor and that I will be competing at the World Championships in August.”

In response to questions regarding her ambition to improve her world record pace, Tobi Amusan responded, “Nothing is impossible and 11 seconds? Most definitely”. However, she expressed reservations about the proposal to raise hurdles to prioritize technique over speed, stating, “Don’t do that, don’t raise the hurdles. Please.”

Tobi Amusan’s performance in this season

Despite the ongoing issue, Amusan participated in the Silesia Diamond League 2023 competition in Poland this past Sunday and attained a new meeting record with a time of 12.34 seconds. In the previous month’s Golden Spike athletics meet in the Czech Republic, she clinched the third place in the women’s 100m hurdles, behind Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico.

In 2022, Tobi Amusan scripted history by becoming the first Nigerian athlete to clinch the title of a world champion and establish a world record in track events. In the World Athletics Championships 2022, she clinched the gold medal for the 100m hurdles, setting a world record with a timing of 12.12 seconds (+0.9m/s) sprint in the semi-finals. She then went on to lower her own achievement in the finals with a time of 12.06 seconds (+2.5m/s).
