Atobiloba Oluwatobi Tobi Amusan, also known as Tobi Amusan, is the current champion in the 100-meter hurdles event in the world, Commonwealth, and African competitions. She holds the meet record in each of the three disciplines as well. She won back-to-back Commonwealth and African championships in the 100-meter hurdles in 2018 and 2022. At the 2015 African Junior Championships, Amusan won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles. She gained national attention the following year after winning her maiden African Games championship at the age of 18.
Tobi Amusan was born on April 23, 1997, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, to schoolteachers Mr. and Mrs. Amusan. She goes by the name Tobi and is the youngest of three siblings. She received her secondary school at Ijebu Ode’s Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School. The University of Texas in El Paso in the United States is where Tobi completed her higher education. She belonged to the Buka Tigers Athletics Club and her collegiate team was the UTEP Miners. She received a scholarship in 2016 to attend the University of Texas at El Paso.
When Amusan won the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, she made history by becoming the first Nigerian woman to win an athletics event at the highest level and set a new world record. She achieved this in the 100 m hurdles event, setting the world record with timings of 12.12 seconds in the semifinal and 12.06 seconds with wind assistance in the final. In just two weeks, she achieved the impossible: she became the world champion, world record holder, went on to become the Commonwealth Games champion in Hurdles and Commonwealth Games gold medalist in 4 x 100m relay event.
