Oliver Hoare, popularly known as Ollie Hoare, or simply Ollie, is a middle-distance runner who represents Australia in the 1500 meter competitions. He is the reigning Commonwealth Games gold medalist as he won the race with a timing of 3:30.12, defeating the current world champion Jake Wightman who clinched the bronze medal. At the World Championships 2022 and Tokyo Olympics 2021, he came in 11th and 18th (semi-final), respectively. He came close to winning a medal at the World Indoor Championships 2022 that took place in Belgrade, Serbia as he finished fifth with a timing of 3:34.36.
Even though he was still swimming in his teens, athletics eventually took the spotlight. As soon as he entered high school, his running skills, especially in track, really began to advance. He won the 2015 Australian U20 cross-country at the age of 17. He relocated to Trinity Grammar, a leading Combined Associated School, in the middle of high school, where he was coached by Brad Woods and was a part of a formidable sports curriculum. Hoare had a close buddy named Morgan McDonald who attended a nearby school to Trinity and was a year older. Olli, who won the NCAA 1500m championship in 2018, followed the same successful path in college as McDonald. Olli beat all of his previous records in 2019, including an astounding 3:54.83 indoor mile at Millrose.
In 2020, after receiving his Economics degree, he made the decision to quit the college running system but continued his training in the USA. He began training with the Colorado-based “On Training” team in August 2020, under the direction of coach Dathan Ritzenhein. Later, in 2020, he started racing again and set a huge 1500-meter personal best of 3:34.63, which was an Olympic qualifying time even though it was outside the qualification window. He also raced a mile in a record-breaking time of 3:53.35. He also raced the first mile in under four minutes, i.e., 3:56, in an unauthorized race in Colorado at 1600 meters above sea level.
He competed in a remarkable sequence of races in the United States in early 2021, that commenced with an Australian 1500m indoor record of 3:32.35, followed by two additional qualifiers for the Olympics, both done outside in times of 3:33.54 and 3:33.19. He was unable to travel back to Australia for the National Championships and Olympic trials in April 2021, but he did have the opportunity to race against Australians in May at the Gateshead Diamond League, where he finished second, ahead of Stewart McSweyn, another top middle-distance runner.
