Ollie Hoare, also known as Oliver Hoare, is an Australian middle-distance runner who predominantly competes in the 1500 metres. He had his greatest triumph to date when he won the 1500 m in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in a Games record time of 3:30.12. He achieved this by defeating the 2019 world champion and Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, Timothy Cheruiyot, as well as the reigning world champion Jake Wightman. With this victory, Hoare became the first Australian since Herb Elliott in 1958 to win the Commonwealth 1500 m or mile championship.

Hoare impressed everyone in his first major championship appearance, reaching the Olympic final in the 1500m in Tokyo, although he had to settle for 11th place. The emerging middle-distance superstar marked his 25th birthday in January 2022 by winning the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York with a winning time of 3 minutes, and 50.83 seconds. He also shattered the indoor records for Australia and Oceania in the process. Hoare began as a swimmer, competing at the state level, but with a father, Greg, who excelled at the beach running, he switched to running. Hoare received a scholarship at the University of Wisconsin after winning the Australian cross-country championship in 2015. In 2018, Hoare won the 1500m at the NCAA championships.

Hoare claimed the 1500m title at the Commonwealth Games 2022 over World Championships 2022 gold medalist Wightman and Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya. Cheruiyot took the lead on the penultimate lap but was passed by Wightman with less than 200m to go. He reclaimed the lead but blew it on the turns and straightaway. Cheruiyot was nearly out of energy when Hoare aggressively past him at the finish line in a new Games record of three minutes and 30.12 seconds. Cheruiyot came in second place with a timing of 3:30.21. Wightman finished third in 3:30.53. Since Herb Elliott in 1958, Hoare is the first Australian to win the mile or 1500m at the Commonwealth Games.
