Sprinter Julien Alfred is from Saint Lucia and was born on June 10th, 2001. At the Commonwealth Games in 2022, she took home the silver medal in the 100 metres. When Alfred ran the 60 meters at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, in Texas, she beat the previous record for the fourth time. She also made history by becoming the first woman in NCAA history to run the 60 meters in under 7 seconds. Alfred rose to ninth place overall thanks to her time. She also ran the 200 meters in 22.26 seconds. It was the second-fastest time ever for a college athlete making her the fourth fastest woman in history.
Alfred improved at both of these events on March 11 at the NCCA Indoors in Albuquerque, New Mexico (at altitude), winning both of them with times of 6.94 seconds and 22.01 seconds, respectively, moving him up to second on both of the respective world all-time lists. She equaled Aleia Hobbs’ North American record but fell two hundredths of a second short of Irina Privalova’s 1993 world record for the 60 metres with “the greatest ever one day sprint double”. Only Merlene Ottey’s time of 21.87 seconds, which dates back to 1993, has been faster in the 200 m. Following her participation in the men’s 100-meter race, Julien went on to compete in the women’s 100-meter race at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial. Julien finished the race in 10.89 seconds, beating out American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson.
