The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2023, which are being held in Austin, Texas for the eighth time (and for the first time since 2019), will provide us with the clearest picture we’ve yet had of that. The action will take place at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas from 7 to 10 June. Both the men’s and women’s NCAA Division I team championships, as well as individual bragging rights, are at stake. Arkansas, which won the men’s and women’s indoor national championships in February, will be a contender in Austin. The Razorbacks should be challenged by the Texas women, with Florida and Oregon also in the mix.  Arkansas, who recently won the SEC championship for men, will face competition from Florida and Georgia.

Both the 100-meter and 400-meter women’s hurdle races are anticipated to be must-see competitions. In the 100 meters, Masai Russell of Kentucky and Alia Armstrong of LSU will compete against one another, and Britton Wilson of Arkansas will attempt to break the previous 400 meters collegiate record.  To be eligible for the Bowerman award, which is given to the most outstanding man and woman at the competition, Wilson will attempt to break records in both the 400m hurdles and the flat.

The list of five athletes to watch earlier this season was published. The list included Julien Alfred (St. Lucia), Tarsis Orogot from Alabama (Uganda), Terrence Jones from Texas Tech (Bahamas), Katelyn Tuohy from North Carolina State (USA), Favour Ofili from LSU (Nigeria), and Katelyn Tuohy from Texas Tech (USA). 27 NCAA records were broken during the indoor season, and the outdoor season has also been noteworthy as the class of 2023 continues to develop after the Paris Games.

Athletes to watch out for

In addition to the ones already mentioned, Austin will host several must-see performances and athletes. In the men’s decathlon, Kyle Garland of Georgia will attempt to break his record, and Godsend Oge Oghenebrume of LSU (Nigeria) will take the lead in the 100m. Jaydon Hibbert (Jamaica), a freshman from Arkansas who competes in the triple jump, has both indoor and outdoor collegiate records already. The jump he made at the SEC Championships in May also broke the world Under 20 record (17.87 meters).

Hibbert’s score also holds the record for all athletes competing in the World Athletics. Watch out for Jones (100 and 200 meters) and Orogot (200 meters) in the sprint competitions as well as the relays. Texas’s Home Hope Alfred, who could challenge for the collegiate record in the women’s 100m, is the favorite. Ofili, who is probably going to run in both relays and she are both athletes to watch in the 200-meter race. The aforementioned Tuohy could compete in both the 1500 and 5000 meters, the latter of which she currently holds the collegiate record in.
