Ethan Katzberg was born on April 5, 2002. He is a Canadian hammer thrower with a world championship title under his belt. He clinched the gold medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, raising his profile as the pre-eminent athlete in this category. Before this achievement, he demonstrated his prowess by securing a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Katzberg discovered his passion for hammer throwing at the age of 14 when he observed his father coaching his sister.

Drawn by the fun of the sport, he started his training journey at the Nanaimo Track and Field Club. After his high school years, Katzberg advanced his training by moving to Kamloops, where he came under the tutelage of Dylan Armstrong, a prominent Olympic medalist in the shot put. Armstrong noted Katzberg was lean and predominantly a basketball player but possessed a unique blend of height and agility — a combination seldom seen in the world of throwing sports. Katzberg’s international debut came at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships. Despite making it to the finals of the hammer throw, he did not register a successful throw.

Nevertheless, he bounced back the following year, winning a silver at the Commonwealth Games. 2023 marked a year of significant success for Katzberg on the international stage. He dazzled audiences by winning a unique mixed-gender hammer throw event at the Paris Diamond League meeting. He then captured his first Canadian national title and, impressively, continued his winning streak at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Here, Katzberg not only reached the finals but set a national record with a throw of 81.18 meters (266 feet 4 inches).

He improved this mark with a phenomenal 81.25-meter (266 feet 6.34 inches) throw, which secured him the gold medal and established him as the world champion. His stunning victory made him both the youngest man ever to win in this category and the first Canadian male to bring home a medal in hammer throwing. Moreover, he managed to outperform legends like Paweł Fajdek, a five-time world champion, and reigning Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki. Katzberg’s triumph was compounded by Camryn Rogers, who took home the gold in the women’s hammer throw, leading to a memorable Canadian double victory in Budapest.
