India is planning to bid for hosting the World Athletics Championships in 2029, shifting focus from its earlier aim to host the 2027 edition, according to a senior official from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The change in plan was confirmed by Anju Bobby George, AFI’s senior Vice President, during the AFI Annual General Body meeting. “Yes, we are interested in bidding for the 2029 World Athletics Championships,” Anju Bobby George stated to PTI. She mentioned that India is also interested in hosting the 2036 Olympics and the 2030 Youth Olympics which makes the 2029 World Athletics Championships a significant event for the country.

The process and timeline for the official bid for the 2029 event have not yet been announced by World Athletics. They have released the bidding details for the 2027 Championships earlier this year, but not for the 2029 event. The most recent World Athletics Championships (2023) took place in Budapest, Hungary, in August, with the next one scheduled for 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.

The AFI is also working on a long-term strategy aiming for the 2036 Olympics, targeting 5-6 athletics medals. This ambition has been shared by Lalit Bhanot, the Chairman of the AFI Planning Commission, during the Annual General Meeting. “We want to achieve high performance, produce world beaters, and win 5-6 medals in the 2036 Olympics,” said Bhanot, who has been assigned the responsibility of developing this strategic plan. To support this goal, three committees have been established to provide insights on various aspects of strategic planning.
