At the USA Track and Field Championships 2023, Cravont Charleston stunned the world when he upset the 2019 100m world champion Christian Coleman and the current 200m world champion Noah Lyles on July 7, 2023. He clinched the victory in the men’s 100m final at the USA Track and Field Championships 2023 in Eugene, Oregon. The 25-year-old North Carolina athlete clocked a time of 9.95 seconds, just slightly faster than Coleman’s 9.96 seconds. 

Noah Lyles trailed behind in third with a time of 10.00 seconds. This trio of Charleston, Coleman and Lyles will be heading to the World Championships in Budapest next month, representing the United States. This victory marked a significant victory for Cravont Charleston as it was his first time reaching the final of a USATF Championships. He was quick to attribute his success to his trust in his training, guidance from his coaches, and his fellow competitors. “I had a great view, Noah, Christian, everybody in the field, just pushing me and I’m really glad I made it through,” Charleston said after his win to the reporters.

Cravont Charleston, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, was born on January 2, 1998. He furthered his education at Mallard Creek High School before attending North Carolina State University. Known for his athletic prowess early on, he was awarded the title of indoor track runner of the year by the Charlotte Observer in 2016.

Charleston first tried his luck at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, which was postponed and had trials in the USA. On June 19, 2021, he ran a 100m race in 10.23 seconds but did not manage to qualify for the heats. A year later, he improved his timing to 10.07 seconds in the heats for the World Athletics Championships 2022’s US trials. He further improved his performance in the semi-finals, clocking in at 10.05 seconds, and secured the eleventh position. In the 200m race at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, he recorded a time of 20.50 seconds, landing him in twelfth place.

The June of 2022 marked a significant milestone in Charleston’s career when he participated in the Geneva International event. For the first time, he broke the 10-second barrier in the 100m event, running an impressive 9.98 seconds. He maintained his good form into 2023 and recorded a wind-assisted 100m of 9.87 seconds in April at the Mt. SAC Relays in Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The following month, on May 27, 2023, he set a new personal record in Los Angeles, running the 100 meters in a swift 9.91 seconds.
