Sprinter and hurdler Jyothi Yarraji has done it again and this time, in the 60 m hurdles event. Jyothi broke the national record once again and claimed the second position at the Elite Indoor Meeting Miramas 2023, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Bronze level meeting, in France. She clocked a timing of 8.17 seconds in the finals, just behind the Cyprus athlete Dafni Georgiou who also had a similar timing but prevailed on the basis of a quicker reaction timing of 0.145. France’s Sacha Alessandrini came in third with a timing of 8.20 secs. Earlier, Jyothi clocked 8.18 seconds in the qualifiers to establish a new national record which she broke again in the finals.

About a week ago, Yarraji had smashed the seven-year-old record established by Gayathri Govindaraj in Doha on February 21, 2016, when she clocked 8.20 seconds in the heats at the Aarhus Sprint’n’Jump 2023 that took place in Denmark on January 25, 2023. With this, she qualified for the finals of the competition by finishing fourth overall in both heats to enter the final A. In the finals, the Visakhapatnam-born athlete ran the 60 meter hurdles event in a time of 8.23 secs to finish fifth in the competition. Sarah Kate Lavin of Ireland, who represented Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, clinched the gold medal, clocking 8.02 seconds.

Record-breaking outing in the year 2022 in 100m hurdles

Since 2022, Jyothi has been simply sensational in the hurdles event. She broke the national record for the fourth time in 100 m hurdles when she clocked 12.82 secs with the wind assistance of +0.9 m/s at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru on October 18, 2022. She had previously run the 100-meter hurdles in 12.79 seconds at the Gujarat National Games in 2022, before clocking 12.82. The wind speed, however, was over the permitted limit of +2 m/s at +2.5 m/s. It was therefore not regarded as a National Record.

On May 10, 2022, Jyothi broke the national record for the first time as she ran 13.23 seconds at the Cyprus International Athletics Meeting in Limassol, breaking Anuradha Biswal’s previous mark of 13.38 seconds that had stood for 20 years. She then broke her personal record and national record again at the Harry Schulting Games in late May 2022 with a timing of 13.04 seconds.
