Johannes Vetter, a German track and field athlete, competes in javelin throw events. He won the gold at the 2017 World Athletics Championships. Additionally, he received a bronze medal from the Doha 2019 World Championships. He ranks second among all throwers of the highest caliber with his personal best of 97.76 meter throw from 2020 which is the German record. Vetter was born and raised in Dresden on March 26, 1993. His grandfather’s birthplace, Königshütte (now Chorzów), was in 1941. After receiving his Abitur, Vetter joined the Polizei Sachsen (Saxony State Police), and he has been a Sportsoldat (Sports Soldier) since September 2014.

Besides Vetter, the Edeka Group is represented by beach volleyball player and Olympic champion Laura Ludwig, beach volleyball player Maggie Kozuch, Javelin thrower and rower Hannes Ocik, and Olympic silver medalist Hannes Ocik. Since 2016, the company has collaborated with over 150 athletes for national campaigns, particular initiatives, and numerous regional relationships with EDEKA shops. Local relationships, in particular, are important for athletes since they not only offer respect and gratitude for their accomplishments, but also allow them to focus entirely on their sport. The presence of Team Germany athletes benefits EDEKA shops as well, as they are regular consumers and key partners in topics connected to food and fitness.

Vetter gained the spotlight in the year 2020. Despite becoming the world champion in 2017, the year 2020 was the breakthrough year for him. Although the world appeared to come to a halt and many athletes faces tough challenges, the year turned out to be a rewarding year for the German javelin star.  The 28-year-old then threw 97.76m in September 2020 at the Continental Tour Gold level athletics event in Chorzow, Poland. With this, he came very close to shattering the world record of 98.48m set by three-time Olympic champion Jan Železný in 1996. He had thrown more than 90m seven times that year alone.
