Ivorian sprinter Gonezie Marie Josée Dominique Ta Lou (born 18 November 1988) competes in the 100 and 200 meters. At the 2016 Olympic Games, she placed fourth in both the 100- and 200-meter finals, missing out on a medal in the 100-meter event by seven thousandths of a second (0.007). At the 2017 World Championships, she went on to win silver in the 100 and 200 meters, the latter with a time that set a new national record of 22.08 seconds. She holds the African record for the 100-meter sprint with a time of 10.72 seconds (2022).

Marie-Josée Ta Lou initially trained in association football, but her older brother persuaded her to switch to sprinting in 2008. She was chosen by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa as the African Athlete of the Year for 2015. She received her training in Paris, France, then attended the Université d’Abobo-Adjamé in Abidjan to study medicine. Football was Ta Lou’s initial sport of preference. In the Koumassi neighborhood, an Abidjan suburb, she played at school. When a women’s team attempted to recruit her, her brother protested out of concern that she would become a tomboy.

By chance, Ta Lou’s mother’s classmate Florence Olonade, the 1988 Ivory Coast 100-meter champion, invited Ta Lou for a trial. Even though she was running barefoot and lacked preparation time, she defeated the Olonade-trained girls in a 200-meter race. Initially, she was unable to routinely train because she needed to finish her high school education. Because she felt there was too much uncertainty in sports, especially women’s sports, her mother was likewise opposed to it. Marie-Josée should study to be a doctor, she wished.
