The UK Athletics has selected the Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad for the upcoming European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. The championships are set to take place from March 2 to March 5, 2023. The UK Athletics’ goal was to choose the squad to maximize the number of medals while also offering individuals capable of finishing in the top eight at the Championships with a growth chance.

The team leaving for the Championships next month includes Laura Muir, a four-time winner, and Keely Hodgkinson, the defending champion. They both will enter the competition as favorites in their respective disciplines. Both the athletes are also the silver medalists from Tokyo Olympics 2020. Daryll Neita and Asha Phillip, both two-time Olympic bronze medalists, have secured their spots in the women’s 60-meter race.

Morgan Lake will compete in the women’s high jump after setting an overall British mark with a clearance of 1.99m earlier this month at a tournament in Hustopece, Czech Republic. She overtook the previous high jump record of 1.98 metres set by Katarina Johnson-Thompson at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Jazmin Sawyers, the UK Indoor champion, enters the event following a great start to the season, leaping an indoor personal best of 6.75m earlier this month.

What the Technical director of the UK Athletics had to say

The technical director of the UK Athletics, Stephen Maguire said, “I have been pleased to see that a number of athletes have stepped up during this indoor season, which means we are able to select a team who have demonstrated current form this year to be in the best position to perform competitively on the European stage.”

“We have a really exciting group of athletes in this team which includes global stars, and also a number of athletes who are continuing their development in the sport and they will learn a lot from this Championship experience. Historically, this has been a Championship in which the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team has thrived, and I am confident the selection panel has selected a squad which will be battling for medals and reaching finals in Istanbul, “he further added.
