English athlete Keely Nicole Hodgkinson, also referred to as Keely Hodgkinson, excels in the 800 meters. She beat Kelly Holmes’ 1995 British record to win the silver medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo at the age of 19. She won the silver medal at the World Championships 2022 and the Commonwealth Games 2022. She also won the 2022 European title and was the youngest woman to ever win the 800 m indoor European championship in Toru in 2021. She won the Diamond League title in 2021. She broke the 800 m indoor British mark in February 2022, moving up to sixth on the all-time global list. Hodgkinson won the U18 European championship and the U20 England championship in 800 m at the age of 16. She has also clinched the British national title on three occasions.
In January 2021, Hodgkinson broke the 800m under-20 world record, and two months later, she became the youngest Briton in history to win the European Indoor gold medal. Just four days after turning 19 years old, Hodgkinson won the 800m at Torun, Poland. She then shocked everyone again by defeating Laura Muir and Jemma Reekie, two experienced runners, in the British Olympic Trials in June 2021. In the 800m final, the 19-year-old set a stunning new British record and earned the Great Britain a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Hodgkinson leapt from fifth place to second with an incredible final 300 meters, shattering Kelly Holmes’s long-standing British record from 1995.
Following a strong 2021 season, Hodgkinson began her 2022 indoor athletics campaign on February 19, 2022, in the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix, winning the 800 m race comfortably in 1:57.20. It was the fastest indoor performance by a woman in 20 years, dating back to the day she was born, when the world record was set. She set the British record, the all-comers’ record, best performance on home soil, the fastest mark ever by a teenager, and the sixth-fastest indoor mark of all time. With one of the most exciting finishes of the World Championships 2022, Hodgkinson finished second to Athing Mu by just 0.08 seconds, taking home the silver with a personal best time for the season of 1:56.38. With a time of 1:57.40, she won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
