Mondo Duplantis and Jakob Ingebrigtsen were declared joint winners of the men’s European athlete of the year award, while Femke Bol was awarded women’s European athlete of the year at the annual Golden Tracks award event held in Tallinn, Estonia, on October 22, 2022. Bol, Duplantis, and Ingebrigtsen won a whopping nine major titles in 2022, including six gold medals at the European Athletics Championships 2022 in Munich. Elina Tzengko and Mykolas Alekna, both European champions as teens, were named this year’s Rising Stars.
Bol accomplished a remarkable triple in Munich, winning European gold in the 400m hurdles, 400m, and 4x400m relay. This followed silver medals in the 400m hurdles and mixed 4x400m at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 and two silver medals in the 400m and 4x400m in the World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22. The Dutch star won the rising star title again this year, beating Ukraine’s world indoor and European high jump champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Belgium’s world and European heptathlon champion Nafissatou Thiam.
Duplantis and Ingebrigtsen are also up for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year award, while Mahuchikh is competing for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award. Rising talents Tzengko and Alekna, who won the men’s discus title and the women’s javelin title, respectively, in Munich, became the youngest champions in the history of the European Championships. In World Championships Oregon, Alekna also won the global silver medal.
Since 1993, the European Athlete of the Year award has been presented annually, while the Rising Star award was added in 2007.
