Jyothi Yarraji strikes Gold in Asian Athletics Championships' 100m Hurdles

Riding on their athletes’ stupendous show, India achieved significant history in the ongoing Asian Athletics Championship. At the end of the second day, India bagged three gold and two bronze medals. However, the highlight of the day will be Jyoti Yarraji. Jyothi emerged victorious in a nail-biting women’s 100m hurdles final held at the Supachalasai Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. Despite heavy rain pouring down on the track, Yarraji clocked an impressive time of 13.09 seconds to claim the gold medal at the ongoing Asian Athletics Championships 2023.

Yarraji’s victory in the final was not any surprise. She had already given an extraordinary performances in the heats earlier. Jyothi showed her dominance in the tournament by posting a remarkable time of 12.98 seconds. Interestingly, this is also her sixth under 13 second timing of the season.

Jyothi Yarraji is an Indian track and field athlete who specializes in 100-metre hurdles. She holds the Indian national record for 100 m hurdles. Jyothi broke the long-standing record by Anuradha Biswal when she ran 13.23s on 10 May 2022. She has broken the record multiple times ever since. Jyothi has also represented India in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the 100 metres hurdles. Additionally, she was also part of the 4×100 m relay team that came fifth. At the 2022 edition of India’s National Games, she won the Gold in both 100 metres and 100 metres hurdles.

On 17th October 2022, she became the first Indian woman hurdler to clock below 13 seconds. This made her the second-best Asian in the 100 metres women’s hurdles in the year. Overall she is the 11th-best Asian ever to achieve this feat. In early 2023, she broke the national record for indoor 60-metre hurdles five times, apart from winning the Silver in the 2023 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships at Astana. Now, with a gold in the Asian Athletics Championship there will be high hopes from her in the Paris Olympics 2024.

What happened in the finals?

The final proved to be a thrilling contest with Japan’s Asuka Terada giving Yarraji a tough challenge. Terada displayed remarkable speed crossing the finish line just a fraction of a second behind the Indian athlete with a time of 13.13 seconds.

However, the final had its fair share of surprises. The event was momentarily delayed due to a false start from Yanni Wu of China. To save herself from getting disqualified, Yanni started arguing. The Chinese argued that she couldn’t hear the sound of the starting gun due to heavy rains. At last, the race commenced and Yarraji and Terada fought out a remarkable battle on the field.
