At the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023 in Bhubaneswar on Monday, Tajinderpal Singh Toor set a new Asian record in the men’s shot-put event to qualify for the upcoming World Athletics Championships. His distance was 21.77 meters. On his third attempt, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, 28, launched the best throw of his professional career. Tajinderpal Singh Toor holds the Asian record in addition to being the current Asian Indoor and Asian Games champions. At the 2019 Asian outdoor championships, he took home the gold medal. In 2023, Tajinderpal Singh Toor took part in six competitions and won gold medals in each one. Karanveer Singh (19.78m) and Sahib Singh (18.75m), who won the silver and bronze medals, followed Tajinderpal Singh Toor in Bhubaneswar.

Murali Sreeshankar, the long jumper who won silver at the Commonwealth Games and qualified for the world championships with a leap of 8.41 meters on Sunday, produced the best jump of 8.29 meters to win the gold. Jeswin Aldrin, the holder of the national record, finished second with a time of 7.98 while P David took third with a time of 7.94, a personal best. The 2021 world U20 championships silver medalist Shaili Singh, 19, and 22-year-old national champion Ancy Sojan battled it out for first place in the women’s long jump competition. Ancy Sojan outjumped Shaili Singh by just two centimeters to win the gold with the best jump of 6.51 meters. Bhavani Yadav Bhagavathi won the bronze medal with a 6.44 meters jump.

Other Indian athlete’s performance

On Monday, the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships 2023 saw up to 19 finals from 47 events. Women’s javelin thrower Annu Rani, male 1500-meter runner Jinson Johnson, and male 200-meter runner Amlan Borgohain all lived up to their nicknames by breaking the Asian Games qualifying mark with gold-medal winning efforts. For Indian athletes, the 62nd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships was their last opportunity to qualify for the Asian Games 2023, which will take place in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8.

However, the final decision regarding how many athletes will represent India in each event will be made by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) selection committee. Manpreet Kaur, a former Asian women’s shot-put champion, and Harmilan Bains, the 800m national champion in 2021, settled for silver medals despite failing to meet the entry standard for the Asian Games. Despite the absence of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav won the gold medal with the best throw of 83.28 meters in the men’s javelin throw competition. Shivpal Singh (81.96m) finished in third place, closely followed by Kishore Kumar Jena (82.87m).
