Poland will host the Cross Country Bydgoszcz na Start on October 23, 2022, as part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold. Kenya’s Lucy Mawia, who placed second overall in the Tour’s previous season, competes in the women’s 6km race, while Joel Ayeko of Uganda resumes his campaign in the men’s 8km race at a city that has hosted the World Cross Country Championships on two occasions.
Mawia improved her fastest times at a variety of distances, from 1500 meters to the half marathon, which she ran in 1:09:38 in Udine last month, after coming in second place in the 2021/22 Cross Country Tour. Her compatriots Maureen Cherotich and Lilian Jepkemboi Lelei, Ethiopia’s Tsiyon Abebe, and Czech Republic’s Moira Stewartova, will be accompanying her at Bydgoszcz. Abebe, the world U20 silver medalist in 3000m in Cali, will compete in her first race since that period at Bydgoszcz. Angelika Mach, the 5000-meter champion of Poland will also run on the home turf.
Ayeko is back in action a week after placing second to Edward Zakayo in the inaugural Gold event of this season’s World Athletics Cross Country Tour in Cardiff. Kibet will be accompanied by his fellow Kenyans Cosmas Kyeva and Boniface Nduva, while other domestic competitors include Szymon Kulka, national 3000m steeplechase gold medalist Mikolaj Czeronek, and two-time 10,000-meter winner Tomasz Grycko.
The World Cross Country Championships were held in Myslecinek Park in 2010 and 2013. However, the Cross Country Bydgoszcz na Start is now a part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold.
