Chala Regasa of Ethiopia triumphed in the elite men’s event of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2022 on Sunday, defeating Felix Kipkoech of Kenya. The women’s event was a one-sided competition as Kenya’s Irene Cheptai dominated the race for the majority of the time and clinched the title in just 1:06:42 seconds. The Indian Elite men’s category saw stiff competition between Avinash Sable and Kartik Kumar as both the athletes clocked almost similar timing to complete the race. However, it was the Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sable who was declared the winner by 0.04 secs by the technical officials of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) after their investigation of the footage.

At the halfway point, Michael Kamau was in the lead. Regasa, though, emerged victorious in a thrilling three-man contest during the final kilometer in the Indian capital, speeding away from Kenya’s Felix Kipkoech and fellow Ethiopian Boki Diriba to claim the 2022 edition of the competition. Kipkeoch came in second place in 1:00:33, and Diriba, the 18-year-old Ethiopian U20 5000m champion, took third place in 1:00:34. The top trio covered 20 kilometers in 57:31 and battled the entire distance to the finish line.

Cheptai made a strong move soon after 12 kilometers and was never challenged afterward. She improved her personal best by a second to 1:06:42. Dawit Seyaum of Ethiopia, who won the bronze medal in the 5000 meters at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, ended in the second position in 1:08:02, more than a minute behind Cheptai. Stella Chesang set a Ugandan record with a time of 68:11 to finish third in the competition.
