The field of athletics is one of the lesser-known sporting arenas up until a few years. That thing changed in the year 2008 when a certain sprinter decided to run not just on the track and field but also on the mind of viewers all around the world. That athlete was none other than Usain Bolt. Nicknamed the ‘fastest man’ alive on planet Earth, Bolt is the record holder of the 100 metres, 200 metres, and 4 × 100 metres relay. Bolt has clocked at 9.58 seconds for the 100 m which is the fastest record in the history of track and field events.

An eight-time Olympic gold medallist, Bolt is the only sprinter to win Olympic 100 m and 200 m titles at three consecutive Olympics (2008, 2012, and 2016). He also won two 4 × 100 relay gold medals. He gained worldwide fame for his double sprint victory in world record times at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which made him the first person to hold both records since fully automatic time became mandatory. An eleven-time World Champion, he won consecutive World Championship 100 m, 200 m and 4 × 100 metres relay gold medals from 2009 to 2015, with the exception of a 100 m false start in 2011. Everyone knows the sporting prowess of Usain Bolt. However, recently he has come out in public to lead a new role in the public.

The New Role

Usain Bolt said he is desperate to play a role in reviving the sport that made him a global superstar but has experienced something of a decline since his retirement six years ago. The Jamaican, who dominated men’s sprinting for nearly a decade after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said he had found plenty to do to keep himself busy but was really keen to remain involved in sport. Bolt has said, “I’m still waiting on a position from World Athletics, I’ve reached out to them and let them know I would love to make a bigger impact in sports, as long as they want me to.” The Jamaican has admitted that his involvement in the game has definitely made an impact on the game. However, since he hung up his boot he wants the new sprinters like Noah Lyles or Christian Coleman to fill in the charisma gap.

Recent on-field performances of Jamaica

After a decade of Bolt-inspired global dominance, Jamaica’s men have failed to win a single-track gold medal at the last two World Championships. At this year’s championships in Budapest, however, Bolt sees some promise of success in young sprinters Oblique Seville and Ackeem Blake. Jamaica are still dominant in the women’s sprints and Bolt said he would be keeping a close eye on compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the World Championships in August. Although his home country is going through a rough patch Bolt is hopeful to make a lasting impact. The first step towards this ascent begins with nurturing the young sprinters.
