Avinash Sable has been one of India’s rising stars in recent times finishing 11th at the recently-concluded World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. India’s national record holder finished 5th in the Diamond League, while breaking the record for the eighth time. India’s best athletics medal haul came at the Delhi CWG in 2010 with 2 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze. Sable will be spearheading the line in the absence of Neeraj Chopra in Birmingham this time around.
Sable will compete in the 3000m steeplechase and 5000m. Avinash Sable has been in fine form and has reset the national record thrice since the Tokyo Olympics last year. The 27-year-old serial record breaker will be up against the mighty Kenyans, who have taken the top 3 spots in the event since 1998. In 5,000m, Sable, despite breaking the national record this season (13:25.65), will need a heroic effort to finish in the Top 8, if he has any chance of making the final.
