Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023: Indian Contingent Results

With this, India has now won six medals, including one gold, four silver and one bronze at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023.

Pavithra Venkatesh and Rosy Meena Paulraj of India claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively in the women’s pole vault on day two of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan. With a best performance of 4.00m, the 22-year-old Pavithra took home the silver medal. Japan’s Mayu Nasu and Pavithra attempted the 4.10m but were unsuccessful. Nasu, who ultimately won the gold medal, also had a personal best time of 4.00m. However, she managed to win the top position as she committed no fouls. Rosy Meena Paulraj clinched the bronze medal after clearing 3.90 meters. With this, India has now won six medals, including one gold, four silver and one bronze.

Jyothi Yarraji once again established a new national record in the women’s 60m hurdles by winning the heats in 8.16 seconds. Jyothi has already broken the women’s 60m hurdles national record on four occasions this year. In her heat, Jyothi edged Japan’s Chisato Kiyoyama by 0.05 seconds to take first place out of 15 participants. The eight-woman final of the women’s 60m hurdles will be held on Sunday. With a timing of 8.61 seconds, Sapna Kumari came in 10th place and couldn’t make it to the finals.

Sarvesh Anil Kushare, the three-time national outdoor champion in the high jump, advanced to the final with a best attempt of 2.14m.  Poorva Hitesh Sawant of India finished fourth in the women’s triple jump, finishing with a best effort of 13.06 meters on her final attempt. Chen Ting of China won the bronze medal with a jump of 13.52 meters. Abha Khatun had a best throw of 14.80 meters and placed fifth in the women’s shot put. Men’s 60m hurdler Tejas Shirse and 60m sprinters Elakkiya Dasan and Amlan Borgohain did not make the final.

On day one, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, India’s national record holder in the men’s outdoor shot put, won gold with a personal indoor best of 19.49m. Toor fouled on his first try but threw the winning throws of 19.49 on his third and fifth attempts to win his first gold medal at the Championships, having previously won silver. With a 16.98m leap in the men’s triple jump, Praveen Chithravel won the silver medal and set a new indoor national record. Swapna Barman, who won gold in the heptathlon at the Asian Games 2018, clinched silver in the women’s pentathlon with 4119 points, a new national indoor record.
