Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia won the TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2022 in 2:17:20, setting a new record for the quickest women’s marathon debut. Tsegaye Getachew took the men’s race in a personal best time of 2:04:49, giving Ethiopia a double victory. Ayana set a Dutch all-comers record by defeating fellow global track gold medalist and compatriot Genzebe Dibaba, who was also competing in her first marathon.
Ayana, Dibaba, and Gemechu were all members of the lead female group that kept up with male runners over 5 km (16:13) and 10 km (32:43). They stayed in the front to the halfway mark, passing in 1:09:26, and then began to move away from the pack, covering 25km in 1:22:06 and 30km in 1:38:04. Gemechu managed to hang on until 33 kilometers before being passed by Ayana and Dibaba. Ayana then slipped away from Dibaba, overtaking in 2:10:07 with a half-minute lead. She pushed on and increased her lead to 45 seconds by the finish, clocking 2:17:20 to break Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s previous fastest-ever women’s marathon debut time of 2:17:23 in Hamburg in April.
Getachew covered 5km in 14:33 and 10km in 29:12 before completing the halfway mark at 1:01:54. When the pacemakers stepped back at 30km, Kenya’s Josphat Boit took over at the lead, passing that stage in 1:28:06 and 35km in 1:43:09. But the pace eventually became too much for Boit, as Ethiopia’s Bazezew Asmare surged past to lead a five-man breakaway group. Getachew pushed himself when they reached 40km in 1:58:23, and no one could match him. Titus Kipruto of Kenya pursued him, with Asmare close behind, but Getachew stepped away and crossed the finish line in 2:04:49. Kipruto hung on to second place, five seconds behind.
