Yared Nuguse, an American middle-distance runner who excels in the 1500 metres, was born on June 1, 1999. He won the competition as the 2019 NCAA Division I champion. Nuguse has the 1500-meter outdoor North American record as well as the 1500-meter, mile, and 3000-meter indoor records for the continent.
Prior to enrolling at the University of Notre Dame, Nuguse was a talented high school runner at Louisville, Kentucky’s DuPont Manual High School. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish was his collegiate team. He led the Fighting Irish to triumph in the Distance Medley Relay at the NCAA Division I Indoor T&F Championships in 2019, then six days after turning 20, he won the 1500 metres in the NCAA Division I Outdoor T&F Championships.
On May 13, 2021, Nuguse ran the 1500 metres with a time that was both Olympic- and NCAA-required, 3:34.36. Cole Hocker defeated him to take second place at the NCAA Division I T&F Championships in a time of 3:35.60. Nuguse finished third at the U.S. Olympic Trials with his personal best time of 3:34.68 to qualify for the 1500 m at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, however he was unable to compete due to a quad injury.
At the BU Valentine Invitational on February 12, 2022, he broke the 18-year-old NCAA indoor 3000 metres record with a time of 7:38.13. At the 2022 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, where he helped Notre Dame’s Distance Medley Relay team to a second-place finish, Nuguse concluded his 2022 NCAA indoor season. He finished eighth in the 3000 metres as well.
