Boasting a career that has gracefully extended over a remarkable span of two decades, Mercedes Martinez stands as a paragon of expertise, fully equipped to bestow her invaluable wisdom upon the forthcoming generation of wrestlers. In a conversation with “Cultaholic,” the esteemed veteran of ROH and AEW provided valuable insights into her discussions with younger colleagues, shedding light on the fact that only a scant few of these interactions revolve around the wrestling facet of the industry.

“As you’re moving up, and you’re training, people forget the business aspect of the 1099s — you’re a freelancer, an independent contractor, contracted this, contracted that,” Mercedes Martinez began. “Make sure you save your money, and if you don’t know how, ask someone. That’s something I was never taught like 20 years young in my career, but that’s something I am now giving advice on, and letting them know, ‘Hey, trademark your name, own your name, own your logos — for your own purposes, especially if you want to make money in this business.”

Mercedes Montez also spoke on how important the name of a wrestler is

For every human being name is something that is given to them at their birth, but a wrestler has to name themselves and create a persona that the fans love and live as the same guy for years and years. So, she also, told her fellow young aspiring wrestlers to get the trademark of their names as no big wrestling company can stop you from using your wrestling name.

“If you get to a certain level in your career, and if you haven’t reached the top-2 or top-3 wrestling companies, make sure you trademark your name,” Martinez continued. “Because that’s your legacy, your name is your legacy — whatever name you’re choosing on the independent scene, trademark that, and trademark your logos. That way it’s always yours, it’s not anybody else’s.”

Martinez acknowledged the influence of her reputation in facilitating her entry into AEW. She candidly admitted that neglecting to trademark her name, a step she had taken in the past, would have had negative implications for her professional trajectory.

“I would never want to be anybody but Mercedes,” she added. “It would be weird for me, after 20-something years, to change my name to something different — just because I got to TV, and my name somehow got trademarked by somebody else. That would suck.” H/T – WrestlingINC.
