Chris Jericho and Sting square up on AEW Dynamite for the very inaugural time ever

Earlier this week, Chris Jericho said that he has no interest in taking on the Sting, before Sting retires later this year.

Professional wrestling giants Sting and Chris Jericho have been friends and associates for many years. They have historically shared locker rooms with the top names in the industry, from WCW to WWE to now AEW. They haven’t spoken, though, until tonight. On this week’s episode of “AEW Dynamite,” Sting and Jericho made history by confronting each other for the first time. When Sting made the decision to enter the arena ahead of schedule for his eight-man tag match with Darby Allin, Keith Lee, and Orange Cassidy against the Mogul Embassy, “The Ocho” was in the ring speaking with his longtime pupil Sammy Guevara and Darby Allin.

The Episode

Sammy Guevara spoke about his future plans for his life and profession when he went out to conduct an in-ring promo. Darby Allin exited and applauded Che Guevara, remarking that it appears that the supporters are on his side. Chris Jericho stepped out and declared that Guevara would be the world champion if he received the call to assist. Guevara said to Jericho that perhaps he wouldn’t have lost against Adam Cole twice if he had been called. When Sting walked out, he and Jericho were standing in the ring face to face for the first time. Jericho had suggested that he and Guevara partner up the following week to beat up Darby.

Jericho raised his bat

The two sports legends locked eyes until Jericho brought his bat up to the WWE Hall of Famers neck. Unfazed, Sting pulled Floyd out of the attacking position and took his own bat from its sheath. The face-painted veteran was getting ready for his impending match as neither man flinched once during the entire conversation. Then, they parted ways without incident.  Both in-person and online viewers are probably wondering the same thing: Could a Sting vs. Jericho feud be imminent? If so, this contradicts remarks made just two days prior by the president of the Jericho Appreciation Society.

“It’ll never happen. Not interested.”

Jericho declared earlier this week that he has no desire to wrestle Sting. It’s clear it was a red herring, and it appears that Jericho and Sting will engage in combat before Sting retires later this year. It’s a common saying in the industry to “never say never.” Jericho, though, continues to follow his own path as he has throughout his entire career. Could this be a precursor to something bigger, or is it merely a one-time tease to excite the crowd? Time will tell if these two legendary talents will run across each other again and even fight.
