Kenneth Wayne Shamrock, a.k.a Ken Shamrock, was born on 11 February 1964. He is a retired professional wrestler, mixed martial artist, and kickboxer who promotes bare-knuckle boxing in the United States. He is most known for his appearances in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and other combat sports. Shamrock is a member of the UFC Hall of Fame and is widely considered a pioneer and icon of the sport. In the UFC and Pride FC, he has headlined over 15 main events and co-main events and has established multiple MMA pay-per-view records. Shamrock was dubbed “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” by ABC News in a series called “The World’s Most Dangerous Things” early in his UFC career.

“The World’s Most Dangerous Man”

Shamrock’s feud with Royce Gracie made him famous in the UFC early on. After a draw in the first UFC “Superfight,” he fought Dan Severn at UFC 6 to become the first UFC Superfight Champion; the title was subsequently replaced by the UFC Heavyweight Championship when weight divisions were added to the UFC. He also became Japan’s first foreign MMA champion, capturing the King of Pancrase Openweight title. He was widely regarded as the best mixed martial artist in the world during his time as the UFC Superfight Champion.

Wrestling career

Shamrock had a successful professional wrestling career in addition to mixed martial arts, notably during his time with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now the WWE). He has held the titles of Intercontinental Champion, World Tag Team Champion, and King of the Ring in 1998. Shamrock also fought for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA, now Impact Wrestling), where he was a one-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion and a 2002 Gauntlet for the Gold winner. In both organizations, he headlined several pay-per-view events, notably D-Generation X: In Your House in 1997, when he contended for the WWF Championship. Shamrock was also one of the first wrestlers in the United States to adopt the shooting style of wrestling, and WWE credits him for popularising the genuine ankle lock submission technique.

Ken Shamrock in WWE

On the show Monday Night Raw when ECW advertised their inaugural pay-per-view, Barely Legal 1997, Shamrock made his WWF debut as a face. On March 23, 1997, Shamrock, branded as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” by ABC News, reffed a submission match at WrestleMania 13 between Bret Hart and Steve Austin. Following WrestleMania, Shamrock made his return to the ring, defeating Vernon White in his WWF debut.

Feud with The Harts

Throughout 1997, he had feuds with Vader, Bret Hart, and The Hart Foundation. Shamrock’s feud with Vader continued in Japan when he battled Vader in an Ultimate Rules Steel Cage match for FMW’s Kawasaki Legend 1997 mega event, which also included four other organizations, according to a working arrangement between the WWF and FMW. Vader won via TKO because Shamrock was suffering from internal bleeding caused by a lung infection and a rib injury. The Harts’ feud with Shamrock culminated in his first WWF pay-per-view big match at In Your House 16: Canadian Stampede. On the October 21 episode of Raw, Shamrock won a no-contest battle against Bret Hart for the WWF Championship. In the main event of D-Generation X: In Your House in December, he battled for the WWF Championship for the second time, defeating champion Shawn Michaels by disqualification due to Triple H’s interference.

Defeating The Rock

Shamrock fought The Rock and his Nation of Domination stable for the Intercontinental Championship in early 1998. Shamrock initially beat The Rock at WrestleMania XIV on March 29, but the verdict was overturned after Shamrock used his ankle lock after The Rock had surrendered, and The Rock was declared the winner by disqualification. In June 1998, Shamrock competed in the 1998 King of the Ring competition, winning the event by defeating Nation members Mark Henry, Kama, and The Rock, as well as Jeff Jarrett. Following the King of the Ring, Shamrock had a brief rivalry with King Mabel, who had intervened to attack him in a rematch with Jarrett, and whom Shamrock defeated in a singles battle while hurting his leg.

Turning Heel

On October 12, 1998, Shamrock turned heel and won the vacant Intercontinental Championship by defeating X-Pac in the finals of an eight-man tournament. Mr. McMahon’s Corporation offered Shamrock “a family” in exchange for his services in November, and Shamrock accepted. The Big Boss Man and Shamrock beat the New Age Outlaws for the WWF Tag Team Championship on December 14, earning Shamrock a two-time champion. The tandem held the belts until they were defeated by Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart on January 25, 1999.

The Corporation

The Corporation and The Undertaker’s Ministry of Darkness began a feud in early mid-1999, with The Undertaker’s henchmen ambushing Shamrock and grabbing Ryan, sacrificing her on the Undertaker’s emblem. Shamrock went on to feud with The Undertaker at Backlash after breaking free from the Corporation and therefore turning face once more. After losing to Undertaker, Shamrock, Big Show, Mankind, and Test formed The Union, an anti-Corporate Ministry stable of wrestlers. After defeating the Corporate Ministry at Over the Edge in May, the Union disbanded.

Departing from WWF

Ken Shamrock had a brief spat with Jeff Jarrett before starting a battle with martial artist Steve Blackman, which saw them fight in a series of unconventional encounters. The feud came a close at SummerSlam when Shamrock won a “Lion’s Den weapons match” against Blackman. He continued to feud with the recently debuted Chris Jericho until late 1999 when he left the WWF to pursue a mixed martial arts career. Mr. Hughes, Jericho’s bodyguard, inflicted harm on him, which caused him to leave.
