Paola Egonu is a volleyball player who represents the Italian women’s national team and is a player for Vero Volley Milano. She was born on December 18, 1998, in the Italian city of Cittadella, Veneto, to Nigerian parents. Her father, Ambrose, is from Imo State and belongs to the Igbo community, while her mother, Eunice, is a native of Benin City. Paola has two siblings, Andrea and Angela, and her cousin Terry Enweonwu is also a professional volleyball player.
She has received several achievements for her exceptional skills in volleyball, such as being named the Best opposite hitter and Most Valuable Player at the 2022 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League. She also earned the title of European Volleyball Confederation’s Female Volleyball Player of the Year in 2021, and the “Most Valuable Player” in the CEV Champions League for the 2022–2023 season.
Beyond volleyball, Paola Egonu is a woman with multiple talents. In 2020, she voiced the character Dreamer Wind in the Italian version of Disney and Pixar’s animated film ‘Soul.’ Additionally, she was a co-host for the Italian TV show ‘Le Iene’ during the 2020-2021 season.
Her professional journey in volleyball began in 2015 with Club Italia. By 2017, she had made it to the Italian League All-Star game and switched teams, joining AGIL Novara. She even carried the Olympic flag during the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. For her achievements on and off the court, Paola was honored with the Woman of the Year award in 2019 by D – la Repubblica delle donne, a weekly section of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
Paola made headlines when she decided to take a break from the Italian national team due to racial abuse. A video came to light where she could be heard saying it was her last game with the national team, after Italy clinched the bronze against the U.S. in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022. She returned to the international circuit for the knockout stage of the CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship 2023.
