Originally from Cuba, Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu, popularly known as Melissa Vargas, is a volleyball player who currently represents Fenerbahçe Opet in Turkey. She began her volleyball campaign as a member of the Cuban women’s national volleyball team and was part of the Cuban squad at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2014 held in Italy. However, in 2021, she became a Turkish citizen and subsequently joined the Turkey women’s national volleyball team in 2023.
Melissa Vargas was born on October 16, 1999, in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Throughout her career, she has earned numerous achievements, including the Best Opposite award in the U23 Pan-American Cup 2014 and Best Outside Hitter titles at events like the Central American Caribbean Games in 2014, Pan American Cup and Games in 2015, and the Best Scorer at the Final Four Cup in 2015, NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six in 2015, and the Champions League in 2018/2019.
Vargas has showcased her serving skills, earning the Best Server award at the Pan American Cup in 2015, Turkey Volleyball Women’s League in 2018 and 2019, and the Chinese League in 2021 and 2022. After becoming a Turkish citizen in 2021, she had to wait for two years before officially joining the Turkey women’s national volleyball team. In 2023, she finally represented Turkey in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2023 .
Melissa Vargas is also playing an invaluable role for Turkey women’s national volleyball team at the CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship 2023. Turkey has reached the semi-final stage of the European championship, a part of which is due to Vargas’ powerful blocks. Vargas is also expected to put on a dominant show as Turkey meets defending champion Italy on Friday.
