Paola Ogechi Egonu, popularly known as Paola Egonu, is an Italian volleyball athlete who plays for Vero Volley Milano and also represents the Italian national women’s team. She has taken part in several high-profile competitions like the Montreux Volley Masters, the FIVB World Championship, and the FIVB Women’s Nations League, all in 2018.
She began her professional career with Club Italia in 2015 and climbed the ranks, earning a spot in the Italian League All-Star match in 2017. That same year, she transferred to AGIL Novara. Giuseppe Manfredi, the head of the Italian volleyball federation, confirmed that Egonu faced racial abuse on social media following Italy’s loss in the semi-finals against Brazil. In a subsequent interview with Sky News, Egonu clarified that rather than retiring permanently, she aims to take a break which indicated that the persistent racist comments aimed at her were among the reasons for her decision.
