Born in Iceland to Russian parents on March 19, 2003, Ekaterina Antropova is a volleyball player who now plays for Italy and as an opposite for the Italian club Savino Del Bene. Just a few months after her birth, her family relocated to St. Petersburg, Russia, where she spent her initial years. At 15, she moved to Sassuolo, Italy, along with her mother, which marked the start of her volleyball career under Italian sports nationality. Initially, she was on the roster for Russia’s Under-16 team for a training season for the European Women’s U16 Volleyball Championship, as recognized by the CEV, however she didn’t take part in it.
Ekaterina Antropova‘s professional journey began in the 2018-19 season with Academy Sassuolo, as she competed in Italy’s Serie C. Her performance was strong enough to earn her a promotion to the first team in Serie A2 during the 2020-21 season. The 2021-22 season was an important season for her, as she joined Savino Del Bene and debuted in Serie A1. In addition, she bagged the Most Valuable Player award in both the 2021-22 Challenge Cup and the 2022-23 CEV Cup, competitions that her club won.
A significant turning point in her career came on August 10, 2023, when she became an Italian citizen. Following this, she swore allegiance to the Italian Constitution that made her eligible for the Italian national team. Subsequently, she was named in the squad for the Women’s European Championship by Italy’s head coach, Davide Mazzanti.
In an interview, she stated, “It is a wonderful day that I have been waiting for a long time, I want to thank the Italian Volleyball Federation, the president of Coni Giovanni Malagò, the Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi, as well as all the institutions and people who have supported me in these months. I can’t wait to wear the blue jersey and take the court for Italy.” As a result, she is currently representing the nation at the CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship 2023.
