In an exhilarating Prime Volleyball League 2024 final, the Calicut Heroes triumphed over the debut team Delhi Toofans with scores of 15-13, 15-10, 13-15, and 15-12. The match took place at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Thursday, where the Calicut Heroes seized their first-ever championship.
Having dominated the league stage and Super5s, the Calicut Heroes entered the final directly. The Toofans, in their first season, ranked second during the same phases and made their way to the final by defeating the previous year’s winners, the Ahmedabad Defenders, in the Eliminator.
This victory not only crowned the Heroes as champions but also earned them entry into the prestigious FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship 2024, set to commence in Chennai between December 9 and 15. In the decisive match on Thursday, Delhi’s defense started strong against the aggressive offense from Calicut.
Players Lazar Dodic and Santhosh made impressive attacks. However, service mistakes by the Delhi Toofans gave the Heroes a chance to come back. Vikas Maan’s substantial defensive blocks, along with Jerome Vinith’s efforts, fortified the Heroes’ defense.
Calicut’s Perotto delivered an exceptional super-serve, gaining his side an early advantage in the game. The Toofans responded by intensifying attacks through Aayush and Aponza, but it was the Heroes who kept the momentum, aided by Delhi’s errors. Danial’s effective blocking further strengthened the Heroes’ lead.
Despite Delhi’s Aponza and Manoj making key blocks, which helped their team clinch the third set, the Heroes controlled the game. Mukesh stepped up for Delhi and Rohit’s powerful serves posed a challenge, but Jerome’s strong spikes in the fourth set overwhelmed the Toofans.
This lead the Heroes to a momentous victory. This event marked the third season of the PVL, with previous wins by the Kolkata Thunderbolts in the inaugural 2022 season and by the Ahmedabad Defenders in the following one.
