Beginning on June 6, the fifth iteration of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League will run until July 23, 2023. The Pool A and Pool B group games are presently being played in Nagoya, Japan, and Ottawa, Canada. The competition’s final round will feature eight key clashes after the preliminary round, which will be hosted in Gdańsk, Poland. The eight teams which will qualify will include the top seven teams, besides the host Poland, who have earned a direct berth in the knockouts as the nation is conducting the tournament.
On June 9th, in the opening match of the day, the second-ranked team in the world, Italy, suffered a straight-set loss to the sixth-ranked United States, with a score of 3-0 (15-25, 18-25, 19-25). In the next contest, fourth-ranked Brazil emerged victorious against eighth-ranked Argentina after a thrilling five-set battle. In the third match, France secured a four-set victory over China.
The fourth match showcased an exciting matchup between the top-ranked Poland and the underdog Bulgaria, ranked 23rd in the world. Although Bulgaria initially seemed poised for an upset, they ultimately fell to the superior Polish team. The seventh-ranked Japan overcame Serbia with a 3-1 victory despite dropping the first set. Meanwhile, the Netherlands showcased their dominance with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Germany.
On Saturday, 10th June, Japan will play Bulgaria at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League 2023. Being the seventh-ranked side of the world, Japan definitely has an edge over Bulgaria. But, Bulgaria also showcased that they can challenge top teams in their last match which they played against World No. 1 Poland and lost by a 2-3 margin. It will be interesting to see who prevails in this contest.
