Co-hosts Slovenia have a massive task at hand when they take on Italy in the semifinals of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2022. The Saturday night contest will be an intriguing one for various reasons. Slovenia will be expected to put a difficult fight since they are one of the co-hosts of the competition. On the other hand, Italy were one of the favourites to go deep in the tournament and so far they have justified the favourite tag by producing consistently impressive results. Even though Italy will be the heavy favourites in the upcoming match, Slovenia will take a lot of confidence from their positive outing in the competition till now.
Placed in a difficult Pool D, Slovenia overcame Germany and Cameroon but lost to France. Overall, Slovenia registered seven points from three group matches. Then they impressively overcame Germany and Ukraine in the knockout rounds to make it to their first World Championship semifinal in history. The Italians, who are still unbeaten in the tournament, topped Pool E with relative ease. Then they got past Cuba in the round of 16, but their real test awaited in a pulsating quarterfinal contest. After a hard-fought battle, Italy defeated reigning Olympic and VNL champions France in a five-set thriller.

The 24-team competition will take place from August 26th to September 11th. All of the teams are divided into six groups with each pool consisting of four teams. The group phase will last for six days, with each team playing once against their pool opponents. Following the completion of the schedule, 16 teams will be ascertained. It will have all six pool winners, runners-up, and the best four third-placed teams. They will proceed to the first round of elimination.
