The 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League is heating up, with action picking up in the middle. The tournament’s fourth edition, which began on May 31st, will run until July 17th. The finals will start on July 13 and will carry on till the 17th. The Nations League comprises some of the biggest names in the sport, with three-time champions the United States, Brazil, and Turkey among others competing for glory. With the tournament currently in the preliminary round, there is still time left for a lot of surprises to happen in the final month.
Germany’s encounter against Italy is one of the highlights of Friday’s matches. Placed at the seventh spot in the table currently, Italy have won four and lost twice, while Germany are further down at 11th, having won two and lost three. Italy have 11 points to their kitty, having played six matches till now, compared to the eight points Germany have after playing five games. Currently, Japan are topping the table with 17 points from six games, having won all the matches they have played till now.
In the preliminary round, 16 women’s teams will compete in pools of 8 teams under the revised format. During the pool stage, each team plays 12 matches. Eight teams will then advance to the competition’s final knockout round. The Finals will include the seven strongest teams, with the finals host – Turkey – entering the knockout round as the top-placed team. It will consist of eight matches in total – four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and bronze and gold medal matches.

The teams at the top of the pile continued their juggernaut, registering comfortable victories to extend their supremacy. Leaders Japan got past Thailand 25-22, 25-16, 25-14 on Friday, while the United States and Brazil also pulled off straight victories. The USA beat Poland 25-12, 25-21, 25-16 and Brazil beat the Netherlands 25-16, 25-15, 25-23. However, China and Italy had to work hard to register their wins. China defeated Canada 25-16, 18-25, 25-12, 25-18 and Italy edged past the Dominican Republic 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 16-25, 15-12.
