Serbia are the defending champions in this competition after they defeated Italy in the final four years ago for their maiden title.
Volleyball fans can brace themselves for non-stop free-flowing action as the 19th edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship gets underway on Friday. The tournament which is hosted in the Netherlands and Poland this year will take place from 23rd September to 15th October. Fans in Poland have more reason to get excited since the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship was also recently held in their country along with Slovenia. In the men’s event, Poland reached the final but eventually fell short to Italy. It will be interesting to see if the women’s team can also go deep in the competition to get the Polish supporters excited again.
Serbia are the defending champions in this competition after they defeated Italy in the final four years ago for their maiden title. They are among the 24 nations that will be competing for the coveted trophy starting on Friday. Seven different national teams have won the World Championship crowns till now. The most titles have been won by Russia, who has triumphed seven times (on five occasions as the Soviet Union). Japan and Cuba each won three championships. China has won it twice, while Italy, the United States and defending champions Serbia have each lifted the coveted trophy once. Colombia, who are the 2021 South American Championship runners-up, are the only newcomers to the current edition.
The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
