The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League began its action yesterday. The Nations League is a yearly competition for international volleyball players. The tournament will take place from May 30 to July 16, 2023. The decisive round will be held in Arlington, Texas, in the United States, at College Park Centre. Four volleyball confederations’ top 16 nations will compete in the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL). It is one of the leading international indoor competitions put on by the FIVB, the organisation that governs the sport. There were some minor changes post which the final roster for the tournament was made. The changes resulted from the 2022 Nations League and the 2022 Challenger Cup. Australia was replaced by debutants Cuba in this edition.

Tuesday will see the Dominican Republic lock horns against Poland in round 2 of the tournament. The Dominican Republic is currently ranked in the tenth place while Poland is placed in the eighth position. Dominican Republic and Poland last met in the World Championship which was scheduled after FIVB Nations League. In the last encounter, the Dominican side destroyed the Polish side. The Dominican Republic won that match in sets of 3-1. The Polish side will look to put aside their last result and continue their winning streak. The Dominican Republic on the other hand will look to start Round 2 with a win. 

What is the format of the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League?

Three weekly stages make up the preliminary round of the VNL 2023 women’s competition. Each week, the teams in the two pools are switched around to include all 16 teams. The top eight teams in the standings after three weeks will move on to the championship round. Each team competes in 12 games during the pool round. The last knockout round of the competition will after that feature eight teams. After the preliminary round, the teams’ rankings will be used to decide the order of the knockout stages. The preliminary stages will be conducted in the following places: Antalya, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Brasilia, Suwon and Bangkok. Preliminary rounds will continue up to the 2nd of July post which the knockout matches will begin.

2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League: Results

The last leg of Round 1 held on Sunday, 4th June 2023 featured six games Croatia and Brazil, Germany and Bulgaria, Japan and China, Thailand and South Korea, Canada and Serbia and the USA and Turkey going head to head against each other in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League. In the first game, the Brazilians came out on top at the back of a dominant performance. Brazil won against Croatia in a dominant play with a scoreline of 26-24, 25-18, and 25-8 (3-0). In the second game, the Germans had a tough time winning against a relentless Bulgaria side (3-2). The German side won with a scoreline of 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24 and 15-10. In the third game, the Chinese side thrashed the Japanese side with a scoreline of 25-18, 27-25 and 27-25 to take the set 3-0.

The fourth match saw Thailand defeat South Korea in straight sets. The scoreline was 25-17, 28-26 and 35-21. The fifth game went down to the wire to see the Canadians fight it out against last year’s runners-up, Serbia. The final scoreline was 18-25, 28-26, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-12. Likewise, the final game saw the USA and Turkey fight it out (3-2) to the last point. The scoreline was 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 11-25 and 15-9.
